“Hey, isn’t that Misty Albertson? That’s the girl…” Kathleen’s voice trailed away.

A girl with a long braid and brown glasses was walking down the sidewalk by herself, avoiding eye contact.

“We never found her,” muttered Aya, “with everything that was going on.”

“No time like the present,” said Peter, emboldened. “She deserves to know.”

“You’re a force, dude,” said Luke, smiling.

Kathleen waved to the girl and called, “Misty? Misty! Hey, aren’t we in the same gym class?” She fell into step beside her. “Boy, do we have a story for you!”

Misty looked confused and pulled her books closer to her chest. “Do we… I mean…”

“We don’t know you yet, but we have met your aunt.”

Misty’s eyes grew wide and the color drained from her face. “That’s impossible,” she stammered.

“At this school, the list of impossible grows shorter every day. Maybe we should start from the beginning. My name’s Kathleen, and there was this thin place between here,” she said, sweeping her arm around, “and the World in Between.”

“She’s in the World in Between?” Misty’s look of shock was only growing.

“Cut to the chase,” urged Luke, then pressed his lips together.

“Yeah, we can fill in the background later. I’m Peter.” Peter held out his hand and Misty reluctantly shook it, immediately letting go.

“Fine, sure. Geez, this isn’t easy.”

“How about, we kind of tore a hole open for a second and talked to your aunt. She said to tell you she’s glad you got out okay and to stop worrying. She’s okay.”

“We even saw her cross over and become part of the light,” shrugged Luke.

Misty wrinkled her nose and hunched her shoulders. “Look, I don’t know why you guys are doing this, but I don’t appreciate it.”

“She doesn’t believe us.” Aya chewed her bottom lip as Misty sped up, trying to put some distance between her and the small group.

“Wait! She said to tell you that you still have the strength of the butterfly within you. Said you’d know what that meant.”

Misty froze where she was and a long, deep breath escaped her, like she had been holding it in forever. Her shoulders dropped, and her eyes shone with tears. “You did see her,” she gasped.

Emma caught up to her and gently put her arm around the girl’s shoulders, squeezing them. “She just wants you to be happy.”

“My family are all Wood Elves. We change our looks constantly. My aunt always said that made us eternal butterflies who could do amazing things.”

“I like it. Hey, we’re on our way to the celebration. Come with us.”

“That’s the least we can do,” muttered Luke, and Kathleen elbowed him.

“A Wood Elf, huh? Very cool,” mused Peter. “You must be able to go wherever you want without being seen. Ever think of being on the school newspaper?”
